I received this book from Give Me Books PR in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Ben Wright isn’t an escort.
Except when he is.
All he wants is to make some extra money to pay off his dad’s medical bills. He never intended to be tied to beds while making the Benjamins.
Miryam Wexler never intended to be dumped by her fiancé before their wedding.
But she was.
Now all she wants is to put her life back together and not tell her grandmother about her humiliation.
He needs money and she needs a stand-in fiancé. They can help each other, if they don’t kill each other first.
Two people with double lives equals four times the chaos and four times the comedy.
How does a guy end up being an escort and how does his life look like? In Katherine Stevens’s Accidental Manwhore we get to know Ben, who ends up in the business by accident, and Miryam, who needs some help when her fiancé dumps her. Their story made me smile.
“Tonight feels warmer than most. Rendering someone speechless leaves me speechless. He looks… enchanted.”
Ben is a hard-working guy with his own business. He could use some more income, but he’s doing fine and he likes his work. When a client approaches him for something totally different, Ben suddenly finds himself in some surprising situations, but he enjoys the perks of his new side job as an escort. When he’s hired as a ‘fiancé’ by a dumped woman it’s a different gig for a change, and it doesn’t take long before he starts to see more in Miryam.
Miryam thought she had her life planned out; the right study, the right job and the right fiancé. Until he dumps her for his assistant, leaving Miryam to deal with the mess. Getting dumped is bad, but Miryam is more ‘afraid’ for the reaction of her family, especially her meddling grandmother. So, she and her friends come up with the brilliant idea to hire a guy the play her fiancé, to postpone the news a bit. Ben is perfect for the job, and soon Miryam starts to see him in a different way.
“I want to kiss you again, but I’m scared to. Are you going to hit me?” “No. I promise not to hit you.”
Accidental Manwhore is a standalone book, and told in a double POV. The first part of the book is mostly form Ben’s POV, telling about his daily life, and his sudden side job as an escort. Like other books by this author this story is easy to read; no flowery monologues or deep inner thoughts, just an entertaining story about real-life issues.
I love Miryam and Ben. Not only as a couple, but also as individuals. I felt sorry for Miryam, her ex really hurt her feelings, but I didn’t understand why she wanted to hide it for her family. Well, that was until they got into the picture. I probably would have done the same. Ben Ben Ben… He’s a good guy but he is a wee bit naive in the beginning. My only issue with Accidental Manwhore is that it takes some time before Ben and Miryam meet, and even longer before they become a couple. We see Ben in action (totally hot) throughout the book , but I wanted more of him and Miryam.
“Did you just say you loved me while we’re sitting in a police interrogation room?” She laughs. It’s a sound I’m certain I’ll never get tired of.”
I’ve enjoyed reading Accidental Manwhore, I give this story 4 stars.
Excerpt
I am not a male escort.
Okay, technically I am a male escort in the sense that I take money from women to go out with them and sometimes have sex with them. But it didn’t start out that way. I own my own business, for Pete’s sake. It’s not turning a huge profit yet, but it’s mine and I don’t have to answer to anyone. Now I have a madam and a Little Black Book. Except I couldn’t find a real little black book, so my escort contacts are scrawled across the pages of the October 2016 Men’s Health that I hide in a kitchen drawer. My whoring schedule is written on a Chinese takeout menu.
Life used to be simple. I barely remember that life now. The past several months are a blur of lies, and sex, and more lies, and a lot more sex, and yarmulkes. Now I’m standing at my door with some eager beaver Miami detective flashing his badge in my face and wanting to know why they found my contact info in a madam’s office during a prostitution bust. I don’t have an answer that won’t land me in jail. I missed the hooker orientation where they tell you to have prepared statements for events like this.
How did it start? How did I go from a guy who waters plants for living to a part-time escort? I would like to say it started with a woman, but it didn’t. It’s kind of a funny story. I took money to bang chicks for my dad. It’s only a little less creepy than it sounds. I wonder if this cop will get a laugh out of it.
