I received this book from Inkslinger PR in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I had no idea how much I would love Alex the day he walked into my life.

He changed everything.
The way I breathed.
The way I thought.
The way I loved.
He brought me back to life.
He gave me strength and a safe place to land.

And then he broke me.

Finding Emilia was a chance to do something good for once in my life.
I wanted to change.
She believed I was her savior.
I ached to be.
She found her way into my heart and claimed it as her safe place.
I should be telling her the truth about me…instead I break her with lies.

Broken by Lies is the first book in ‘the Bound and Broken Series’ by Rebecca Shea. It tells the story of a young, somewhat naive woman falling for a guy with a dangerous background. While this story has a few clichés and all, I really like this author’s writing style, so I’m not bothered by them. I really like Broken by Lies.

“Don’t be scared. I won’t let anything hurt you.” It’s the first of many lies I will tell Emilia.”

Emilia is a young woman who has just lost her mother, the only family she had. With barely any money to her name she decides to move to the big city; to start over and maybe to find her father. Meeting a handsome rich man isn’t part of her agenda, but Alex is a bit hard to ignore. After he rescues her from a dangerous situation she can’t say no this his offer, but it doesn’t mean she does everything he asks her. Emilia tries to keep all normal between her and Alex, but soon she starts falling for him.

“What am I doing here? I got into a car with a beautiful stranger and let him take me home. I should be afraid, I should feel fear—but I’m drawn to the danger—attracted to the stranger.”

Alex is the co-owner of a transportation business and owns some real estate. While it sounds legitimate, it’s the front face of the real family business; dealing and transporting all kinds of illegal things. As the son of a ruthless man Alex didn’t join the business because he wanted to, but because his father made him. Since his line of work is so dangerous Alex doesn’t want a woman in his life, but he can’t stay away from Emilia. He knows he can’t offer her a normal life, but he needs to have her.

“Why are you helping me? I mean, I met you for two seconds last night.” It’s a damn good question. One I wish I knew the answer to. “I don’t know. All I know is I can’t leave you out here with nowhere to go.”

The moment Emilia and Alex meet, there is an attraction between them. However, they don’t act on it: Emilia is dealing with the loss of her mother and her new situation, and Alex believes he can’t have a normal life. So, for the moment the couple settles as roommates. Emilia is surprised by Alex’s wealth, but she doesn’t want to take advantage. Whenever he wants to do something for her, she fights him all the way. Denying their attraction doesn’t work of course, and Emilia and Alex end up falling for each other. Since this is part one of a series, the book ends with a cliffhanger…

Although there are quite a few clichés in Broken by Lies, I really like the story. I like how the author has written the characters, and how they react to each other. Alex is a reluctant criminal who isn’t very happy with his ‘career’, and Emilia is a sweetheart looking for a new life in a new town. They come from very different walks of life, but somehow they just match. Besides Alex, Emilia has a second suitor in the form of Sam. I’m not sure how I feel about this guy, and after the ending of the book, I’m not sure I trust his motivations. I can’t wait what the next book brings.

“I love you, Em. Please. Stay. Let me figure this out. I’ll get you answers.”

I’ve enjoyed reading Broken by lies, I give it 4 stars.
