I received this book from L. Woods PR in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I am the ghost that haunts your dreams. I am a liar, a protector...a killer...I am death.
You think you know my story, but you have no idea. My death was just the beginning.
I’m a dead man.
In the years since I escaped the shadow organization that owned me, my vow to protect my family is the only thing that kept me alive.
Until I meet her.
Too bad I need the monster to protect her from the demons of her past.
Too bad she’s not that innocent.
Cliffhanger Warning: I know you want the whole story right now. But that's not how things went down. And I think you know by now when it comes to ORUS, things don't always go according to f*cking plan.

(The Deep Duet unfolds over the course of two books. Deep will be followed by Deeper, releasing on January 29th)

I not only read books by authors I already know, but I also love to discover a new author. Or in this case, and author duo. Especially with new-for-me authors the blurb (or the synopsis) really has to draw me in. The blurb for Deep intrigued me, and I’m glad I picked it up. It wasn’t what I thought it would be, but I really like this story and I need to know how it ends.

“Now was not the time. He didn’t have room in his life for a relationship. Nor was he that guy. As much as he wanted her, he wasn’t an idiot.”

Rafe and Diane meet by accident – literally – and hit it off, but do they really know each other? Rafe has left his old shadowy life behind, and is working currently working for a private security firm. He likes his job, but he can’t shake his past actions and the man he used to be. Diane wasn’t close to her dad, but she loved the man and was devastated about his murder. Tracking down his assassin leads her to Rafe, and it’s difficult for her to see the murderer in him. Rafe shouldn’t fall for a woman he hardly knows, and Diane should know better as well, too bad attraction doesn’t care one bit.

“Are you sure you want to? Tears pricked her lids. This was so fucked. What did she have if she didn’t have this? She’d made a mistake, and now she needed to live with it.”

Deep is written by author duo M. Malone and Nana Malone, and it’s my first book by these authors. The story is written in a third-person narrative, from both Rafe and Diane’s POV. It took me a few chapters to get into the story, but once I was in, I was hooked. Besides the main couple, the side characters all add to the story, making it more real. I’m very curious about Noah and Lucia, and luckily they have their own books available.

I have to be honest. When I started Deep, I thought I was getting a dark story. Kidnapping, abuse, you know what I mean. I was a bit disappointed it wasn’t anything like that, but once I stepped away from the ‘ugh, I want a dark read’, I started to enjoy Rafe and Diane’s story very much. It’s fast-paced with a lot is going on; ‘jobs’, secrets and hidden agendas. I love Diane and Rafe together, their attraction is off the charts and they just make sense, even with the secrets between them. How it ends? Their story continues in Deeper, I can’t wait to read it.

“You can’t wait for someone to protect you, you need to protect yourself.”
