I received this book from Ardent Prose in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Numbers.
They haunt me.
I can’t look into a person’s eyes without seeing the six-digit date of their death.
I’m helpless to change it, no matter how hard I try.
I’ve trained myself to look down. Away. Anywhere but at their eyes.
My camera is my escape. My salvation. Through its lens, I see only beauty and life—not death and despair.
Disconnected from all those around me, I’m content being alone, simply existing.
Until I meet him.
Tavian.
The man beyond the numbers.
How can I stay away, when everything about him draws me in?
But how can I fall in love, knowing exactly when it will expire?
Exp1re is the first book in the ‘Exp1re Duet’ and introduces the reader to Lyra who didn’t have an easy life. Meeting Tavian at the absolute worst time is the beginning of a friendship, that slowly transforms into something much more. I need the next part of the Duet, Etern1ty now!
“Why?” I whisper. “Why me?” “Because, buttercup.” He smiles, his eyes sad, and kisses the tip of my nose. “We aren’t an accidental meeting of souls. Trust the timing of your life.”
After the death of her parents, Lyra has closed herself off for other people. She lives a solitary life, and stays away from other people. When she meets Tavian, Lyra knows he’s like other people, but after their ordeal she feels a bond with him she can’t ignore. Tavian is traveling to find himself, and Lyra is unsuspected but very welcome traveling companion. Lyra and Tavian aren’t looking for love, but both can’t deny their growing feelings.
Last night, kissing her for the first time… it confirmed everything I thought to be true. She’s it. My one. The variable I never knew was missing.
Just like other books by this author, I love the writing style. From beginning to end, you’re glued to the pages and you need to know what will happen next. Exp1re is told from Lyra and Tavian’s POV, but most of the time it’s through Lyra’s eyes. The prologue is painful to read, but it’s necessary to understand Lyra and her decisions.
Oh Lyra, I feel so sorry for her. She’s carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders, and I understand her need to keep a distance to other people. Knowing what she knows hurts. Tavian is a bit of a lost soul himself, and I love him and Lyra together. Since this is the first part of a duet, Exp1re ends with a cliffhanger. I need Etern1ty as soon as possible, I want to know what will happen with Lyra and Tavian.
“I stand here staring for a minute or two at the empty space where he just was, hoping that’s not the last time I’ll see the man who owns my heart. Unfortunately, we’re working against one thing I can do nothing to stop—time.”
I love Tavian and Lyra, I give the first part of the ‘Exp1re Duet’ 4 stars.
