Eleven years ago, I saved her. I loved her. But they took me away from her and locked me up. For two years, all I could think about was her. She consumed me. Took up every room in my head and gave me something to focus on, knowing I would see her soon.

Nine years ago, I watched her as she walked down the aisle and into the arms of a man who wasn't me. My brother. I left my home and never looked back.

Now, I'm staring at seven letters, each envelope stamped with one word in bold, red ink: URGENT.

I have no choice but to go back home. Seeing her will be the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. But in order to reconcile with my past, I have to face my present. Even if the thought of seeing her, knowing that she is out of my reach, kills me.

I have no idea what awaits me, but I can only hope that the demons of my past will finally be buried and put to rest.

Fall Back Skyward is the latest book by Autumn Grey. For me, this is a new author so I was very curious going in. Second Chance stories are one of my favorites, and given the synopsis from this book I knew it was going the be heartbreaking. I wasn’t disappointed; I love the story and the authors writing style.

“I’d set my priorities straight. I’ve known what I wanted and wasted no time getting it. I knew where I wanted my life to go and I’ve worked hard to get there. Until now. Until the letters.”

Cole is a broken man. Nine years ago he saw the love of his life marrying his older brother, and after that betrayal he just ran and never looked back. Till this day he doesn’t have contact with his family, until he gets some urgent letters from his parents and from Nor – the girl he loved – forcing him to face the truth and come home. Learning what actual happened all those years ago, learning what he has missed during the nine years away from Nor is hard. All he knows the feelings he had for her, are still there, and won’t go away.

“Jesus Christ. She’s still beautiful, despite the changes in her body. My breathing quickens, and fire spreads in my veins as the love that has been simmering under my skin flares to life. I should have known I could never hate her, no matter how hard I tried.”

Nor grew up in an ugly environment. Her father was a gruel, sadistic man who reigned his family with an iron fist, her mother had lost all fight in her. To cope with the tense atmosphere at home, Nor found relieve in cutting herself, leaving her with permanent marks all over her body. Moving next door to Cole changed her life; becoming friends and falling in love with the deaf young man altered her view on the world. What she didn’t count on was the absolute hatred her father felt for Cole, a hate that drove him away, leaving her behind to pick up the pieces of her broken heart. Seeing Cole again after nine years only confirms she still loves him.

“I’m worried that if I look away he might vanish in thin air. I continue to stare at the man I’d once loved and still do so much that my heart still aches with the immensity of it all nine-years later.”

When Cole and Nor see each other again, it’s very clear they both still have feelings for each other. Learning the truth about what happened all those years ago is hard for Cole, but he knows it’s time to man up. Slowly, Cole and Nor are getting to know each other again, they talk about the past, what happened when they were apart. Cole tries to keep himself a little distant from Nor, from the whole situation they’re in, since it’s not just about the two of them. Because the love they had for one another as young adults is still there, them ending up together is a given fact.

Fall Back Skyward tells the story of Cole and Nor in a double point of view (POV). Throughout the story the book switches from present to past and back; you see Cole and Nor fall in love as youngsters, their horrible breakup and their road back to each other. Nor’s father is a true villain; just because of his rigid narrow-minded ideas he destroyed his daughter’s heart and that of the man who loved her. Fall Back Skyward is heartbreaking at times, but there’s also lots of love, sexy times, family and friends.

“Love is when you accept each other’s weirdness and faults and demons, without judging them. Without trying to change them. It’s unconditional. It’s fearless. It’s powerful. And for me, love is Cole. He is my once in a lifetime. My happily ever after.”

I love Fall Back Skyward, plain and simple. I give this story 4.5 stars.
