What happens when a wedding planner no longer believes true love exists?
LaneyMcAdams is Austin’s rising star of wedding planners, and from the outside she looks like the perfect good girl. But when faced with the ultimate deception, her world comes crashing down around her, leaving her alone, afraid, and tormented by dark secrets and regrets.
Bodie Brooks is successful, dangerously good looking, and battling his own painful past. Having just returned to Austin, he’s hiding his own secret about the real reason for coming home. When their paths collide, he awakens her deepest longings, convincing Laney he is nothing but dangerous.
He’s always been unattainable and gorgeous.
She’s broken into a million pieces. But after one afternoon of uncontainable passion, Laney is forced to decide if she will do what she promised she would never do again.
Memories of a Broken Girl is the debut book by Harley Maye. As a reviewer, I love to discover a whole new author. And as a reader, I love to read about a hurt woman finding love again in an unsuspected place. This story is the perfect combination, and for a debut book it’s well written. I’ve enjoyed reading it and I look forward to future books by this author.
“The driver turned back in anticipation of my passing. His face, which had been hidden by the bill of his baseball cap, became fully visible, and my heart skipped a beat. Could it be him?”
Laney is a sweet young woman with a great job; planning the perfect wedding day for engaged couples. But while she loves her job, Laney’s own love life is in shatters. Her fiancé Ryan turned out to be a frog instead of the prince she thought he was, leaving her with a broken heart and a lot of questions. Laney spends a lot of time with her best friend Callie, who tries to help her to get over Ryan. For years Laney, has had a secret crush on Callie’s stepbrother Bodie, and seeing him again brings back all the feelings she had for him in the past.
“I sighed, exasperated at how off guard he made me. Usually, when someone mouthed off to me like that, I’d laugh at them with a cute little fling of my hair and brush them off. But this guy was kind of under my skin, and I didn’t know what to do about that.”
Through their connection with Callie, Laney and Bodie have known each other for years. Both Laney and Bodie have been in a bad place; Bodie has lost his wife, Laney got betrayed by her fiancé. Bodie knows he wants to move on with Laney, but she has still a lot of healing to do. Her relationship with Ryan was a toxic one, with Laney losing herself more and more. While Bodie and Laney spend time together, they find out both were interested in the other one in the past, but misunderstandings, assumptions and other love interests kept them apart. But now it’s their time, they finally can see if they can make it work.
“I hope I don’t offend you here—you’re pretty perfect as it is.” Butterflies. All fluttering. It really wasn’t disapproval. A smile broke loose on my lips.”
Bodie and Laney are realistic people who both deserve a new love. The author writes their slowly developing relationship in a very real way; both Bodie and Laney react like real people with real feelings and emotions. Learning what Laney went through with her ex is a bit upsetting, I’m glad the author left it to the imagination, didn’t fully described what had happened. As already said, for a debut book it’s well written story with a great couple, great supportive friends and a healthy dose of angst.
“Do you want to know my secret?” Bodie looked up, his sober eyes studying me. “Yes,” he whispered back. “I love you.”
I’ve enjoyed reading Memories of a Broken Girl, I give this debut book 4 stars.
