An enriching story of family ties, broken hearts, and second chances from New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Probst.

When Ethan Bishop returns to the Hudson Valley, his body and spirit are a little worse for wear. As a former Special Forces paratrooper, he saw his fair share of conflict, and he came home with wounds, inside and out. At his sisters’ B & B and farm, he can keep all his pain at a safe distance. But quiet time isn’t easy when a fiery woman explodes into his life…

It’s business—not pleasure—that brings Manhattan PR agent Mia Thrush reluctantly to the farm. Tightly wound and quick tempered, Mia clashes immediately with the brooding Ethan. Everything about him is irritating—from his lean muscles and piercing blue eyes to his scent of sweat and musk.

But as the summer unfolds and temperatures rise, Ethan and Mia discover how much they have in common: their guarded histories, an uncontrollable desire, and a passion for the future that could heal two broken hearts. But will their pasts threaten their fragile chance at a brand-new future?

Guarded city-girl meets closed-off small-town boy. Do they even have a chance, or are they doomed from the start? The Start of Something Good tells the charming story of Mia and Ethan, who both don’t know what they really want, but who find love anyway. I love their story.

“In that moment, he’d felt completely connected to her. Because he’d felt alive again. Because he’d felt seen for the first time.”

Mia is the owner of a small but successful PR-company and is always in control. Her love-life however is another story; she’s been burned a time or two too much and isn’t looking for a new guy any time soon. Being devoted to her clients’ careers, she tries to help them wherever she can, even if it means spending the summer in the countryside (the horror). This also places her in on the same farm as Ethan, former special forces/bodyguard who returned home after a brutal incident. He always wanted to leave the family-farm, but right now it’s the place he needs to be. Mia and Ethan are annoyed by each other, but they can’t fight a certain attraction…

“The bastard was seducing her at a Mama Mia play after feeding her luscious cupcakes and kissing her like the last woman on Earth. How was she supposed to fight it?”

Mia and Ethan are both good, serious people, who don’t mind some hard work. Mia as a PR specialist, Ethan on the farm doing hard, physical work. Both are shaped by their pasts, and both guard their heart. Mia is a true and true city girl, who’s horrified by the idea of small town life, farms, animals and everything that comes with it. Ethan is back to recover from physical and mental injuries, and to help out his sisters. Mia and Ethan together are sweet, they have chemistry and I love their banter.

The Start of Something Good is the first book in Jennifer Probst’s new ‘Stay Series’, and it has all the usual ingredients. A sweet heroine, a good guy hero, interesting siblings and a lot of descriptions; everything I like Jennifer Probst’s books for. It’s also a sweet story without over-the-top situations or problems with jealous exes; just two people trying to figure out how they can make it work. I can’t wait for the other books in the series!

“They’d started with something good, but they’d ended up with the best thing of all. Love.”
